How does it work?

Traditional Acupuncture is an holistic treatment that manages disease as well as being preventative.

It is based on the meridian system and the flow of energy within these

meridians. Illness and pain occur when the meridians become unbalanced or

blocked and prevents the energy to flow freely.

Very fine needles are used to stimulate acupuncture points on the body to help balance the flow of energy and restore imbalance. This means that each treatment is unique to the individual and focused on the root cause of a problem not only the symptoms.

Acupuncture belongs to Chinese Medicine which includes many different treatment techniques such as:

Moxibustion: Dried mugwort ( moxa)  is burned  on needles or near the skin with the intention to warm and invigorate the flow of qi or expel pathogens.

Cupping: Cups are placed on the skin to create suction. This stimulates the blood flow and promotes healing.

Great for aching  backs and shoulders.

Guasha: Rubbing of the skin to produce light bruising , stimulates blood flow and releases toxins.

Tuina: Chinese massage stimulating acupuncture points , promoting flow of qi and releasing tension.

 What can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture can treat a multitude of conditions. Here is a list of the more common complaints and ailments that can be successfully treated

  • Migraines

  • Insomnia, stress ,anxiety, fatigue

  • Seasonal Allergies

  • Menstrual and menopausal disorders

  • Infertility and IVF support

What to expect at the first consultation and treatment.

To be able to understand your presenting complaint and health issue  I need to ask questions about your past medical history and current symptoms. Some questions might seem irrelevant to your condition but it helps me to paint a complete picture of your state of health.  I will  examine your tongue, take your pulse and palpate your abdomen. These steps are all part of the Chinese Medicine way of diagnosing and assists me in formulating the best treatment plan tailor made to you.

Many frequently used acupuncture points are located on the arms and legs so it is advisable to wear loose fitting clothes.

How many treatments do I need?

My aim is to help you feel better as soon as possible! Acute conditions for example a sports injury or muscular tightness can respond very quickly and be resolved after only a couple of treatments. Chronic conditions take longer, however positive changes and improvements are generally felt after 4-5 treatments.

Does it hurt?

No. The needles are very fine , like a few strands of hair, nothing like the needles used for injections. A dull ache might be experienced initially which transforms into a sense of calm. Most people find acupuncture very relaxing.
